It was a slow start to the season for the C3 Icebreakers with two big losses but they went undefeated for the rest of the regular season. “The focus was on having fun,” said head coach Jim Neal. “We never discussed winning or losing until playoff time”. The team’s dedication was evident at their 6:30 a.m. practices where all the kids showed up ready to learn. The coaching staff ran drills focused on skating and on the opportunities they witnessed in the previous week’s game. The primary focus was on working hard and truly learning to love the game of hockey. “We had a very good team work ethic; there were no selfish players with passing as one of our key strengths,” said Coach Neal. “The championship game was against the team that beat us 9-0 at the beginning of the season. We were underdogs. We treated it like just another game. We didn’t do anything different—same routine, same lineup. The boys were loose in the dressing room. We won because the boys gave 110 per cent for the full 45 minutes. We consistently beat the other team to the puck and had great goaltending. It was a well-balanced team. So well balanced, that our second goalie scored a goal as a player and assisted on another. “It was a very rewarding season for me. A great bunch of boys, great group of parents, and we had fun at every practice and game.”
