The Port Moody Peewee A2 squad is celebrating the organization’s only Presidents Series banner.
The club edged out Abbotsford by a single point, which may help to make up for the fact that Abbotsford beat out the Bantam team by a single point in Presidents Series Group 3.
“It was a good result. The Peewee B team last year didn’t win a game all year. We’ve got a fair number of those guys returning, so it’s been a real turnaround season,” said head coach Bill Trenaman.
Port Moody’s record of 5-1 was superior to Abbotsford’s, but the race was tight thanks to the fact that Abbotsford got all their sportsmanship points while Port Moody took two too many penalties against Surrey in their fourth game.
The string of wins was a team effort, but the club got a lot of support from its first year players, who struggled to adapt to the faster tempo of the Peewee game at the beginning of the season but clearly found their legs as the campaign wore on.
“It was their first exposure to hitting in hockey, but they all picked it up pretty fast after the first eight to 10 games and really turned a corner,” Trenaman said.
The boys are taking a break from hockey until the end of March, when they will travel to Anaheim with their families to play in a tournament while soaking in the sights and sounds. “We wanted to take the kids on a year end fun tournament. It’s not just about the boys but the siblings and parents too. It’s a nice reward for all the hard work.” |
